FAQs
What is a repeat prescription?
A repeat prescription is a medication that your doctor has authorised on your file which can be supplied for a certain period of time on a regular basis without having to see your doctor each time. Repeat prescriptions are normally authorised for a period of 6 to 12 months but this may vary with the type of medicine and at the doctor’s discretion.
Will I receive an email confirming receipt of my request?
No, you will not receive an email, but the system stores a history of everything you ordered.
Can I use my email address for more than one family member?
To keep patient’s records secure each patient will need their own login and password.
Why can I not see all my medication on the repeat medication list?
The doctor who prescribed your medication will decide whether it will be listed as a repeat medication on your records. This is a safety issue to ensure you are reviewed appropriately before any further medication is prescribed for you. If it is appropriate for you to order further prescriptions of the medication online it will be available for you to see and order when you login.
Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication
Please read detailed information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website and NHSBSA website.
How long does a repeat prescription take to process?
Please allow 48 hours for your prescription to be processed.
Prescriptions are sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy.
Please note: Your pharmacy may need an additional 72 hours to obtain and dispense the medication.

Cost‑Effective Prescribing
Bishops Close Medical Practice is committed to providing effective, good value treatment while reducing waste.
As medication prices and availability change, we may suggest safe alternative treatments.
We will always inform you of any changes and are happy to discuss concerns.
NHS Opioid Reduction Plan
Our practice is taking part in the NHS Opioid Reduction Plan, a collaborative effort designed to help patients safely and gradually reduce their opioid medication.
Research shows that long term opioid use is often not effective for ongoing pain, and over time the risks and side effects can outweigh the benefits. By working together, we can explore safer and more effective ways to manage pain.
If you would like to discuss reducing your opioid medication or want more information about the programme, please contact the surgery.
Shared Care
Shared care is a formal agreement between your hospital specialist and the GP practice. Under this arrangement, your specialist may ask the practice to take over prescribing and ongoing monitoring of your medication.
This approach allows your care to be managed closer to home, while your specialist remains involved in your treatment.
Shared care is commonly used for conditions such as:
- Rheumatology conditions
- Dermatology conditions
- ADHD
- Mental health conditions
Please note that shared care arrangements are only accepted when appropriate and in line with local and national guidelines.
