Training

Staff Training

Most staff training is arranged so that it does not impact the service to our patients. When the surgery is closed, call NHS 111 for free. You will be directed to the appropriate healthcare professional near your home. Always “Talk before you Walk” by calling 111 first, as an appointment is required to attend primary care hubs.

In a genuine emergency, call 999. Chest pain and/or shortness of breath are emergencies.

GP Registrars

A GP Registrar (GP trainee) is a fully qualified doctor completing specialist training to become a GP. They have usually worked in hospitals for at least two years and are closely supervised by an experienced GP. The registrar year is the final stage of their GP training.

Medical Students

Bishop’s Close is committed to medical education and training future GPs, working closely with Newcastle University under the lead of Dr Sarah Paul.

Medical students (usually in their 4th or final year) may sit in on consultations or sometimes see patients first as part of their training. You will be informed beforehand, and all students are bound by confidentiality. A supervising GP will always review your care.

If you would prefer not to have a student involved in your consultation, please let the reception or admin team know when booking or before your appointment.

For prescription requests please use the NHS App or online services, email us, register to use our telephone request service or drop your repeat slip at the practice.
